Global Learning Lab a Multi-Cultural Adventure PDF Print E-mail

The PCA Global Learning Lab received local recognition in the Pittsburgh Business Times “Guide to Western Pennsylvania Schools” in their article “Ready for Globalization”. There are many reasons... for exposing our children to other languages and cultures, such as spreading the gospel and preparing to be part of a global work force.

Innovation in learning and being on the cutting edge is nothing new to PCA faculty and staff.  This year saw the beginning of a new concept in foreign language learning as students undertook the challenge of two foreign languages:  Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.  It has been an adventurous first year for Mrs. Doverspike, Global Learning Lab teacher, and her students! They have truly expanded their horizons and knowledge after one semester of each of these languages.  The students, from Kindergarten Transition through Sixth Grade, were not only exposed to the language, but the culture and customs of the nations where these languages are the native tongue.

During the first semester focusing on Spanish, students learned various aspects of the Spanish language as well as cultural aspects of Mexico, Spain and Central America. They made Talavera plates, Peruvian gold and silver sculptures, Inca mosaics, and tried native foods.

The second semester of learning Mandarin Chinese was rung in by celebrating Chinese New Year with native foods and crafts.  Our global learners learned to speak Chinese greetings, numbers, colors, months of the year and days of the week.  They practiced ancient stenciling and calligraphy, made a dragon with streamers, and learned the Chinese Lion and Ribbon Dances. The students also discovered the importance of sharing Jesus with the world as they looked at some Chinese religions.

The learning cycle continues next year as students are exposed to German and French languages and cultures.  If you have background or experiences to share, please contact Mrs. Doverspike.
