Mathematics

“Students have different abilities, needs and interests, but they all need mathematic skills to use in their personal life, in the workplace and in further study.”

We believe that it is necessary to balance computation skills with the ability to apply mathematic concepts to solve everyday problems.  In addition, much  research has been done affirming  the necessity for students to be able to communicate and to “think mathematically” in order to continue in higher mathematics.  All components of mathematics are included in our curriculum starting in kindergarten.  Students study number sense and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis and probability, reasoning, communication, connections and representation.  A wide variety of materials is utilized, beginning with Harcourt Mathematics  and extending to include materials from Marcy Cook, Math:  A Way of Thinking.  Other supplemental materials provide a wide variety of learning opportunities for the students.

All students deserve an opportunity to understand the power and beauty of mathematics and to see that mathematical truth comes from God. Students need to learn a set of mathematics basics that enable them to compute fluently and to solve problems creatively and resourcefully. We desire students to become mathematically literate and be challenged to further their mathematical understanding.
